Rev. Rick Warren’s choice to deliver a prayer for the inauguration seems appropriate to me. He seems to be a very sincere man, who has written an excellent book, "The Purpose Driven Life," He has made good sermons about not being overly concerned with materialism in contrast to the prosperity ministry. Surely people will recognize as a Christian he would likely invoke Jesus’ name. Cannot people separate acts of policy and a simple prayer? Would not such a watered down prayer be lacking? Society is tolerate of many things such as dirty t.v. shows and movies, cannot the same be exercised in an important formal occasion?
Actually, a small minority of fringe deviants are raising a stink and the press gives them the undeserved attention.

Rick Warren campaigned in California to take away marriage rights from gays. The fact that he’s doing the invocation is pretty upsetting to the part of the Democratic base that supports gay marriage.

People cannot stand the name of Jesus, p eriod. They are offended by a man who claims Jesus as his saviour. It is because they are lost and dead in their sin.

I don’t understand it. It’s not like he’s part of Obama’s administration. I think the media is making more out of it then it really is.

It’s the media promoting and feeding this "Inauguration Prayer". Otherwise, we wouldn’t know anything about it. They (the media) are creating all of this "Controversy".

You are correct, Rick Warren "seems" like a lot of things. Most of all a hypocrite. There must be a method to the Madness for choosing someone so polarizing. Fortunately we will all forget about Rick Warren by January 22nd.

Two main reasons.
1. He’s white.
2. He’s not onboard the gay bandwagon.

Because he’s not just against equality, as guaranteed by our forefathers, but he had the gull to put gay marriage on the same level as child molestation. Even if you think consensual gay sex is wrong, it is far from being as wrong as raping a child.

One reason it’s controversial is that we’ve just gone through eight horrendous years that could probably have been avoided had not the Republicans, under the brilliantly diabolic leadership of Karl Rove, rallied the Christian conservatives to their side using the "triple threat" of guns, God, and gays.
In short, I think the country is getting more than a little tired of religion (read: Christianity) affecting public policy, and Rick Warren’s inauguration role is an unpleasant reminder of that type of unfortunate influence.

Rick Warren believes, as many do, that homosexuality is wrong and not a thing to be celebrated, as some do.

Because some Americans are just not happy unless they can find something to complain about. You just can’t please everyone, no matter what you do, especially when you’re the President, or about to be as the case may be.

History shows us that millions of people have lost their lives due to discrimination. People are still losing their lives today, in Africa, the United States and elsewhere because of discrimination. Discrimination is not Christian and we need to put an end to it rather than reward it by giving a proponent of it a speaking role at the inauguration. That’s the bottom line. Rick Warren is probably the worst choice Obama has made so far.
When a backwards, ignorant person puts himself out as a white supremacist, it is easy to understand how feelings of inferiority and stupidity play a role in his decision to believe that he can elevate himself above one targeted minority group. Negative opinions are expressed in the Bible in regard to many groups of people, one of them being gluttons, a group that includes Rick Warren. I can’t recall anything in the Bible that states that gluttons, gays, prostitutes or anyone else should be denied basic freedoms. That Rick Warren feels that he should be entitled to all of his civil rights while campaigning to deny the civil rights of another group of people is an exercise in hatred. For a religious leader to behave in this manner is a bad mark on Christianity, just like the pervasive molestation of male children by some Catholic priests. Rick Warren is hurting organized religion and the fabric of our country because he and others like the Catholic priests are weak Christians. True Christians – people who rescue animals, work for the civil rights of others and feed the homeless can’t benefit from weak religious leaders and wouldn’t want to expose their children to such people.
I don’t have a problem with Rick Warren mentioning Jesus’ name and I expect him to do so, since he tends to be a divisive person. Were it me, I would want to be inclusive of all of the people in the world who are watching. I wouldn’t mention Allah because the name is unfamiliar to many religious people, just like Jesus is unfamiliar to many people. I would concentrate on unifying religious themes like goodness, compassion and caring for the poor.
